Donal could tell something had changed for Edik. After that second gust of raw magic, when he had locked up all through his body, his attitude had changed. Donal wasn’t quite sure what it was that changed, but Edik looked ... suspicious. As though expecting to get attacked at any moment.

But then, Edik had probably never felt a gust of wild magic before. Much less had so much magic pass through him at once that it locked him up that way. Arms, legs, back, neck. Looked like a whole-body seizure.

Poor guy. Only an Initiate, after all. He didn’t have the training to handle more magic than he was accustomed to channeling on his own.

So Donal was glad when the welcoming committee got them indoors and behind wards. Yes, the wards on the cafeteria building were the same, simple wards that came on all of these temporary constructions. Simple, and not good for more than maintaining their integrity in the face of the unknown, but they were more than enough to keep any further gusts of magic from hitting poor Edik like that.

Donal, on the other hand, would have loved a little more time out in them. He’d gotten to spend so little time on Venus that he hadn’t really gotten to explore such gusts at all. The two he’d already felt here had been fresher and more exciting, made the few he’d felt on Venus limp and predictable by comparison.

But from those two brief gusts, Donal had only gotten to take a small amount of that power into himself, and he hadn’t had even a moment to analyze it.

He couldn’t wait to learn more about this local magic.

But that would have to keep, for the time being.

First, the locals.

The cafeteria was typical for its design. The big, round bottom floor of a three-story conical building, maybe thirty meters across, with all the furniture built in. Running bars circled the ceiling, shining out light from simple fire enchantments. The kind supported by alchemy, rather than elementals.

In the center, the transparent bubble tube. Maybe three meters wide, the tube allowed water elementals to carry a warded cage and its bubble of air up to the upper levels and back.

The cafeteria design had long bench seating, with a pass-through window at one end leading into the kitchen, next to the flapping door that led into the same room. There was also a buffet setup near the kitchen. Empty right now.

And all of it that same, uniform white ceramic.

“Didn’t bring any paint with you?” Donal asked as Gonzalez-Villarreal led them to the table nearest the kitchen, and the two guys in green continued on through the flapping doors. “I’d think all this white would get to you after a while.”

“Your brother said pretty much the same thing,” Gonzalez-Villarreal said with a smile. “But we couldn’t spare the room in the cargo hold. We’re developing some pigmentation here through alchemical means, that we should be able to spread.”

“Maybe a little sympathetic approach to spread it?” Donal asked.
